In early April 2012, Bents retired and sold the business to Paul Kirkman who changed the name to Itasca Leathergoods to extend the brand identity beyond its moccasin-making roots. Kirkman maintained the company's staff and over the next two months completed a brand makeover, launching the company into a fashion-forward business closely aligned with its premium quality heritage. The original factory store was renovated inside and out. The logo was modernized while clearly acknowleding the company's heritage adjacent to Itasca State Park. Moccasin styles and colors were updated. Advertising and social media campaigns were designed and executed. And most important, a second store deemed to be the company's flagship store was built in the prestigious resort community of Crosslake, MN. Both the original factory store and the new flagship store earned rave reviews from customers and received favorable press reports throughout the state. A third store is slated to open in April 2013 in Hayward, WI and other sites in resort towns are under consideration for future expansion. Additionally, the company continues to seek wholesale customers -- typically independent fashion-forward boutiques in urban settings.
