about us

CHARAC (pronounced chair-ack), was formed in 1996 by a group of artists and individuals interested in promoting the arts in our region. Its genesis came from the Chequamegon Fine Arts Festival that had been held at Telemark beginning in 1992. As a not-for-profit organization of artists and friends united to advance the opportunities and services for artists and the general public, the organization is committed to the importance and value of art and its creation in our communities.

The Council hosts an art exhibit at Northwoods Health Center; at the Weiss Library in Hayward, and a Main Event each year that rotates between Cable and Hayward locations. In 2011 CHARAC will host it's 2nd Annual Juried Art Exhibit. From 2000 to the present, CHARAC has sponsored art events and activities by Northwoods Strings; 2nd Sunday Poets; WOJB concerts; Chequamegon Children's Theater; Serendipity Players; and of course, the Park Theater Project. In 2010 CHARAC hosted the first of what we expect to be annual Art Crawls in both Cable and Hayward. CHARAC continues to provide scholarships to the local high schools; Emerging Artists Grants; Grants for education/workshops; and Professional Artist Grants.
