Saturday, February 6 Snowshoe Adventure in Fairyland Join Master Naturalist Volunteer, Sharon Schaver, for a nature scavenger hunt at the Wayside Wanderings Natural Play Area. Be prepared for off-trail explorations. Dress for the weather. Families welcome. Meet at 10:30 a.m. at 43135 Randysek Road in Cable. Call 715-798-3890 to register by February 3. Meet the Museum?s live education raptors in person! Our birds cannot be released into the wild due to permanent injuries, but they are able to teach you all about the amazing world of raptors. Please come early to find a seat. Donations accepted.

Friday, February 12 Snowshoe Hike to a Heron Rookery (Adult Naturalist Program) Join Naturalist Emily Stone for a moderately strenuous adventure behind the Rookery Pub. We?ll look for tracks and signs, talk about the local natural communities, and view a great blue heron rookery. Dress for the weather. Meet at 3:30 p.m., then end in the Rookery for a warm drink. The Hayward Farmer's Market will be having a winter indoor market on the second Saturday of every month, November through May at the Northern Lakes Cabin Stop in Hayward.  

Saturday, February 13 Leopold Bench Workshop Aldo Leopold was a UW-Madison professor who became known as the Father of Wildlife Management. At his farm near Baraboo, WI, he not only developed a philosophy he called the ?Land Ethic,? he also designed a simple bench now known as a ?Leopold Bench.? Build your own! Long-lasting, high-quality cedar lumber will be pre-cut. Participants should bring a crescent wrench or wrench set and cordless drill if possible. Some tools available to borrow. Friday, February 19 Family Snowshoe Hike Are you looking for a fun activity to do with the family before the big ?Birkie? race? The Cable Natural History Museum has partnered with the American Birkebeiner Foundation for a one-mile leisurely snowshoe hike in the peaceful winter woods. Learn about winter ecology and wildlife tracking and experience the Northwoods on snowshoes. Meet at the Museum at 10:00 a.m. and return by noon. Adult and children?s snowshoes are available for use from the Museum for $2/child pair and $4/adult pair. The program will not occur if the temperature is below 5° F. Donations accepted. Thursday, February 25 Dinner Lecture: Leading away from Lead (Adult Naturalist Program) Lead is a dangerous toxin. UMD chemist Bob Carlson will describe some of his recent work on keeping lead out the environment, the implications of "additive manufacturing? such as 3D printing, and the broader implications of developing environmentally friendly new materials. Meet at 5:30 p.m. at the Rookery Pub. You may also join us for dinner and conversation after the presentation. Call 715-798-3890 to register by February 24. $5 member/$10 non-member.

Friday, February 26 The Secret Lives of Goldenrod Galls Have you ever noticed those strange balls on goldenrod stems? They hide an amazing story! Naturalist Emily Stone will share the fascinating science behind these mysteries, and you can dissect your own galls! Students age 5-9 are welcome with an adult helper. Ages 10-99 are welcome to come on their own. Discovery for all ages. Meet at the Museum from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Space is limited. Call 715-798-3890 to register by February 25. Donations accepted.

Saturday, February 27 Buckskin Pouch Workshop Learn how to make your own handy buckskin pouch. Students will learn how to design, cut, lace and finish a useful attractive pouch. All tools, buckskin and other leather provided. All ages welcome but children under age 13 need to be accompanied by an adult. Meet at the Museum from 9:00 a.m.-noon. Space is limited. Saturday, February 27 Winter Tree ID at the NGLVC (Adult Naturalist Program) Learning to identify trees without leaves is like learning to read a new language. Naturalist Emily Stone will go over the skills indoors, then move outdoors for hands-on experience. The beauty is in the details! Meet at the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center in Ashland, WI, at 1:00 p.m. and return by 3:00 p.m. Dress for the weather. Snowshoes may be borrowed from the NGLVC, if needed.
