Feb 12 Snowshoe Hike to a Heron Rookery
Friday, February 12 Snowshoe Hike to a Heron Rookery (Adult Naturalist Program) Join Naturalist Emily Stone for a moderately strenuous adventure behind the Rookery Pub. We?ll look for tracks and signs, talk about the local natural communities, and view a great blue heron rookery. Dress for the weather. Meet at 3:30 p.m., then end in the Rookery for a warm drink. Feb 13 Leopold Bench Workshop
Saturday, February 13 Leopold Bench Workshop Aldo Leopold was a UW-Madison professor who became known as the Father of Wildlife Management. At his farm near Baraboo, WI, he not only developed a philosophy he called the ?Land Ethic,? he also designed a simple bench now known as a ?Leopold Bench.? Build your own! Long-lasting, high-quality cedar lumber will be pre-cut. Participants should bring a crescent wrench or wrench set and cordless drill if possible. Some tools available to borrow. Friday, February 19 Family Snowshoe Hike Are you looking for a fun activity to do with the family before the big ?Birkie? race? The Cable Natural History Museum has partnered with the American Birkebeiner Foundation for a one-mile leisurely snowshoe hike in the peaceful winter woods. Learn about winter ecology and wildlife tracking and experience the Northwoods on snowshoes. Meet at the Museum at 10:00 a.m. and return by noon. Adult and children?s snowshoes are available for use from the Museum for $2/child pair and $4/adult pair. The program will not occur if the temperature is below 5° F. Donations accepted. UMD chemist Bob Carlson will describe some of his recent work on keeping lead out the environment, the implications of "additive manufacturing? such as 3D printing, and the broader implications of developing environmentally friendly new materials. Saturday, February 27 Winter Tree ID at the NGLVC (Adult Naturalist Program) Learning to identify trees without leaves is like learning to read a new language. Naturalist Emily Stone will go over the skills indoors, then move outdoors for hands-on experience. The beauty is in the details! Meet at the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center in Ashland, WI, at 1:00 p.m. and return by 3:00 p.m. Dress for the weather. Snowshoes may be borrowed from the NGLVC, if needed.
