Join local birders Skip Perkins and Tom Matthiae for a long, fun day of winter birding at the Sax-Zim Bog, which is an hour northwest of Duluth. Target birds will be Great Gray Owl, Northern Hawk Owl, Black-billed Magpie, Black-backed Woodpecker, Boreal Chickadee, Northern Shrike, Gray Jay, Hoary Redpoll, Pine and Evening Grosbeak, and maybe a Boreal Owl. The pursuit of winter wildlife at its best! Meet at 10:00 a.m. at the Museum, return by 9:00 p.m. Bring your lunch and snacks. We?ll go out for dinner in Duluth. The American Kestrel is North America?s smallest falcon, but as we all know, big things come in small packages. Come learn more about this tiny predator and meet our live kestrel at the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center in Ashland, WI. Herpetology is the scientific study of reptiles and amphibians. Wisconsin is home to many different species of turtles, lizards, snakes, frogs, salamanders, and toads. Join Museum Naturalist Katie Connolly at the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center as we discover what makes these critters so unique. This beautiful fruit basket has a 10 inch round wooden base and colored reed for accent. Weavers will be able to hone their twining skills using round reed. Master Naturalist Volunteer and professional forester, Suzanne Brown and her daughters will share their passion for winter tree identification. Join them for a short snowshoe hike at the Wayside Wanderings Natural Play Area, and learn to ID the winter trees! Meet at the Cable Natural History Museum at 10:30 a.m. Return by noon. Are you looking for a fun activity to do with the family before the big ?Birkie? race? The Cable Natural History Museum has partnered with the American Birkebeiner Foundation for a one mile leisurely snowshoe hike in the peaceful winter woods. Learn about winter ecology and wildlife tracking and experience the Northwoods on snowshoes. Meet at the Museum at 10:00 a.m. and return by noon. Adult and children?s snowshoes are available for use from the Museum for $2/child pair and $4/adult pair. The program will not occur if the temperature is below 5° F. Donations accepted. Come join the fun at this year?s Camp Birkie for Kids! Children in Kindergarten through 6th grade can participate in this day-long environmental education camp sponsored by Conserve School of Land O?Lakes, WI, in partnership with the American Birkebeiner Foundation and the Cable Natural History Museum. Camp Birkie for Kids will include outdoor activities, crafts, games, snacks, and lunch. Participants will also have the opportunity to visit the Museum. Space is limited. Registration is required. In the summer of 1971, Larry and Margaret Stone (Emily?s parents) paddled and portaged 1200 miles in 109 days from Grand Portage to Saskatchewan following the fur trade route of the voyageurs. Larry wrote about the trip for the Des Moines Register. They will share their real, old fashioned slide show of the trip, and reminisce about the adventure, voyageur history, and much more. Join us at 5:30 p.m. at the Rookery Pub. You may also join us for dinner and conversation after the presentation.
